Zaid bin Wahb narrates: Bearing witness in the name of Allah, I state this: I heard Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) saying this in Rabadhah: Once, I was walking with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in the rocky area of Madinah at evening time. Mount Uhud came before us. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Abu Dharr! I do not like that I should have gold equal to Mount Uhud, and then by the third evening, even a single dinar from it remains with me, except for that dinar which I have kept aside for repaying a debt. Regarding this gold, I would keep saying about Allah’s servants: Give this much to him, give this much to him, meaning I would keep spending it in front of me, behind me, to my right, and to my left. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Abu Dharr, those who possess abundance (of wealth and riches) in this world will be the ones with little (reward) on the Day of Judgment. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: Remain in your place until I come to you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) left, and then after the darkness of night had spread, he returned. I heard a sound, and I feared that perhaps some harm had come to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I was about to set out, but then I remembered the instruction of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so I remained seated in my place until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself came. I submitted to him: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! At first, I intended to come to you, but then I remembered your instruction. I had heard a sound. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: That was Jibreel (peace be upon him); he came to me and informed me that any person from my Ummah who dies in such a state that he does not associate anyone with Allah will enter Paradise. I asked: Even if he commits adultery or steals? He said: Even if he commits adultery or steals. The narrator named Jarir says: This same narration, with another chain, is also transmitted from Sayyiduna Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in a similar manner. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:): There are two clarifications hidden in this narration. One of them is: Whoever dies in such a state that he does not associate anyone with Allah Almighty will enter Paradise, if Allah Almighty, by His grace, forgives the sins he committed in the world. The reason is: A person in this world inevitably commits some forbidden act, so this condition will be hidden in the narration. And the second condition is: If a person dies in such a state that he does not associate anyone with Allah, he will enter Paradise. This means: Allah Almighty will punish him in Hell for some time. We seek refuge with Allah from Hell. This will happen if Allah Almighty does not forgive him by His grace. The reason for this is so that only those people remain in Hell who associated others with Him in the world. So both these conditions are hidden in this narration. It does not mean that every person who dies in such a state that he does not associate anyone with Allah will necessarily enter Paradise.
