Chapter: Zakat Recipients – Report Indicating That Banu al-Muttalib and Banu Hashim Equally Prohibited from Charity
Hadith 3297
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ قُتَيْبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ يَحِيَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا يُونُسُ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي سَعِيدُ بْنُ الْمُسَيِّبِ ، أَنَّ جُبَيْرَ بْنَ مُطْعَمٍ أَخْبَرَهُ ، أَنَّهُ جَاءَ هُوَ وَعُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ يُكَلَمَانِهِ فِيمَا قَسَمَ مِنْ خُمْسِ خَيْبَرَ لِبَنِي هَاشِمٍ ، وَبَنِي الْمطَّلِبِ ابْنَيْ عَبْدِ مَنَافٍ ، وَقَرَابَتُهُمْ مِثْلُ قَرَابَتِهِمْ ، فَقَالا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، قَسَمْتَ لإِخُوَانِنَا بَنِي الْمُطَّلِبِ ، وَبَنِي هَاشِمٍ ابْنَيْ عَبْدِ مَنَافٍ ، وَلَمْ تُعْطِنَا شَيْئًا ، فَقَالَ لَهُمَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَمَا إِنَّ هَاشِمًا وَالْمُطَّلِبَ شَيْءٌ وَاحِدٌ " ، قَالَ جُبَيْرُ بْنُ مُطْعَمٍ : وَلَمْ يَقْسِمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِبَنِي عَبْدِ شَمْسٍ ، وَلا لِبَنِي نَوْفَلٍ مِنْ ذَلِكَ الْخُمْسِ شَيْئًا ، كَمَا قَسَمَ لِبَنِي هَاشِمٍ وَبَنِي الْمُطَّلِبِ .
Sayyiduna Jubair bin Mut’im (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once he and Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) presented themselves before the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to discuss with him about the distribution of the Khaybar fifth, which the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had divided among Banu Hashim and Banu Muttalib. Both of these are descendants of Abd Manaf. They wanted to talk to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about this, because their own relationship (to the Prophet) was the same as that of those people. Both of them submitted: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! You have distributed the (Khaybar fifth) among our brothers from Banu Muttalib and Banu Hashim, but you have not given us anything. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to them: Are Hashim and Muttalib not one and the same? (Because they are the children of one father.) Sayyiduna Jubair bin Mut’im (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not give anything from this fifth to Banu Abd Shams and Banu Nawfal, whereas he gave from it to Banu Hashim and Banu Muttalib.
