Chapter: Zakat Recipients – Clarifying That the Prophet Removed the Date from al-Hasan’s Mouth After He Chewed It
Hadith 3295
سَمِعْتُ أَبَا خَلِيفَةَ ، يَقُولُ : سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ بَكْرِ بْنِ الرَّبِيعِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ ، يَقُولُ : سَمِعْتُ الرَّبِيعَ بْنَ مُسْلِمٍ ، يَقُولُ : سَمِعْتُ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ زِيَادٍ ، يَقُولُ : سَمِعْتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ، يَقُولُ : أَتَى أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَمْرٌ مِنْ تَمْرِ الصَّدَقَةِ ، فَأَخَذَ الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ تَمْرَةً فَلاكَهَا ، فَأَدْخَلَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِصْبَعَيْهِ فِي فِيهِ ، فَأَخْرَجَهَا ، وَقَالَ : " كِخْ أَيْ بُنَيَّ ، أَمَا عَلِمْتَ أَنَّا لا تَحِلُّ لَنَا الصَّدَقَةُ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Dates of zakat were brought to the service of Sayyiduna Abu al-Qasim (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Sayyiduna Imam Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) took one of those dates and put it in his mouth. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) put his two fingers in his mouth and took it out, and said: O my son, spit it out. Do you not know that zakat is not lawful for us?
Hadith 3296
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ قَحْطَبَةَ ، بِفَمِ الصُّلْحِ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، " أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَمُرُّ بِالتَّمْرَةِ سَاقِطَةً ، فَلا يَمْنَعُهُ مِنْ أَخْذِهَا إِلا مَخَافَةُ الصَّدَقَةِ " .
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) would sometimes pass by a fallen date, but he would not pick it up out of concern that it might be from the zakat.
