Chapter: Ushr (Tithe) – Ordering to Hang a Bunch of Dates in the Mosque for the Poor
Hadith 3288
أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ الصُّوفِيُّ ، بِبَغْدَادَ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحِيَى بْنُ مَعِينٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي مَرِيَمَ ، عَنِ الدَّرَاوَرْدِيِّ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ ، وَعَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، أخيه ، كلاهما عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، " أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمَرَ لِلْمَسْجِدِ مِنْ كُلِّ حَائِطٍ بِقَنَا " ، قَالَ أَبُو حَاتِمٍ : عَبْدُ اللَّهِ هَذَا : هُوَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ حَفْصِ بْنِ عَاصِمِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ مِنْ عُبَّادِ أَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ ، قَدْ غَلَبَ عَلَيْهِ التَّقَشُّفُ وَالْعِبَادَةُ حَتَّى كَانَ يَقْلِبُ الأَخْبَارَ ، وَلا يَعْلَمُ ، فَلَمَّا كَثُرَ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُ فِي أَخْبَارِهِ ، بَطَلَ الاحْتِجَاجُ بِآثَارِهِ ، وَاعْتِمَادُنَا فِي هَذَا الْخَبَرِ عَلَى أَخِيهِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ دُونَهُ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) had ordered regarding the mosque that a bunch (of fruit) from every garden should be placed in it. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:): This narrator named Abdullah is Abdullah bin Umar bin Hafs bin Asim bin Umar bin Khattab. He was among the devout worshippers of the people of Madinah. He was dominated by asceticism and worship, so he used to mix up narrations and would not realize it. Therefore, when a large number of such mistakes were found in the narrations transmitted by him, it became invalid to use his narrations as evidence. So, regarding this narration, our reliance will be on the narration transmitted by his brother Ubaidullah, not on him.
