Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent me to collect zakat from the tribes of Bali and Udhrah. I passed by a man from the tribe of Bali who had thirty (30) camels. I said to him: "It is obligatory upon you to give a bint makhad (a young she-camel) from these camels." He said: "This is such an animal that cannot be ridden and does not give milk. I do not like to present inferior wealth to Allah. You have the choice (to take another animal)." Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "I cannot take from you more than what is obligatory upon you. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is present, so go to him." That man went to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said the same thing he had said to Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "This is what is obligatory upon you. If you bring more than this, we will accept it from you." He said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! This is a fat, healthy she-camel. Who will take possession of it?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) instructed, so a man took possession of it. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prayed for blessing in that man's wealth. The narrator named 'Ammarah says: After that, a long time passed. Marwan (who was the governor of Madinah) sent me to collect zakat from the tribes of Bali and Udhrah. This was during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Amir Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him). I passed by that man, and according to my calculation, the zakat on his wealth was thirty (30) hiqqah, including one male animal, and the number of his camels was one thousand five hundred. Ibn Ishaq says: I asked the narrator named Abdullah bin Abu Bakr: "What is meant by a male animal?" He replied: "The Sunnah is that when a person's zakat reaches thirty (30) hiqqah, then a male animal is also to be taken along with them."
