Chapter: Warning Against Withholding Zakat – Another Report That May Be Misunderstood as Prohibiting Leaving Any Wealth Behind
Hadith 3264
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدُ بْنُ مُسَرْهَدٍ ، عَنْ يَحِيَى الْقَطَّانِ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي عُبَيْدٍ ، عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنَ الأَكُوَعِ ، قَالَ : كُنْتُ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأُتِيَ بِجِنَازَةٍ ، فَقَالُوا : صَلِّ عَلَيْهَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : " هَلْ تَرَكَ عَلَيْهِ دَيْنًا ؟ " ، قَالُوا : لا ، قَالَ : " فَهَلْ تَرَكَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ ؟ " قَالُوا : ثَلاثَةُ دَنَانِيرَ ، قَالَ : " ثَلاثُ كَيَّاتٍ " ، ثُمَّ أُتِيَ بِالثَّانِيَةِ ، فَقَالُوا : يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ صَلِّ عَلَيْهَا ، قَالَ : " هَلْ تَرَكَ مِنْ دَيْنٍ ؟ " قَالُوا : نَعَمْ ، قَالَ : " فَهَلْ تَرَكَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ ؟ " قَالُوا : لا ، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ يُقَالُ لَهُ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ عَلَيَّ دَيْنُهُ ، قَالَ : " فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " .
Sayyiduna Salamah bin Akwa’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) when a funeral was brought. The people said: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! Please perform the funeral prayer for him. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked: Did he leave behind any debt? They replied: No. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked: Did he leave behind anything? They replied: Three dinars. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Three things with which he will be branded. Another funeral was brought and the people said: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), please perform the funeral prayer for him. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked: Did he leave behind any debt? They replied: Yes. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked: Did he leave behind anything? The people replied: No. One of the Ansar, whose name was Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him), said: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! The repayment of his debt is my responsibility. The narrator says: So the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed his funeral prayer.
