Chapter: Warning Against Withholding Zakat – Description of the Punishment for Hoarding Wealth on Judgment Day
Hadith 3257
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفِيَانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أُمَيَّةُ بْنُ بِسْطَامٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ سَالْمِ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ ، عَنْ مَعْدَانَ بْنِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ ، عَنْ ثَوْبَانَ ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " مَنْ تَرَكَ بَعْدَهُ كَنْزًا مُثِّلَ لَهُ شُجَاعًا أَقْرَعَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ لَهُ زَبِيبَتَانِ يَتْبَعُهُ ، فَيَقُولُ : مَنْ أَنْتَ ؟ فَيَقُولُ : أَنَا كَنْزُكَ الَّذِي خَلَّفْتَ بَعْدَكَ ، فَلا يَزَالُ يَتْبَعُهُ حَتَّى يُلْقِمَهُ يَدَهُ فَيَقْضِمُهَا ، ثُمَّ يَتْبَعُهُ سَائِرَ جَسَدِهِ " .
Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever leaves behind a treasure after him, on the Day of Resurrection that treasure will be turned into a bald snake, which will have two zabib (meaning teeth protruding from the sides or two black spots above the eyes). It will follow that person, and the person will ask, 'Who are you?' It will say, 'I am your treasure which you left behind.' Then that treasure will keep following him until the person stretches out his hand towards it, and the treasure will chew his hand and then swallow his entire being."
