Hadith 3237
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: A man came to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him for something. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) looked once at his head and then at his feet, that is, he observed his destitute condition. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him: How much wealth do you have? He replied: Forty camels. The narrator says: Upon this, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I said: Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) have spoken the truth: If a man has two valleys of gold, he will desire a third with them. Only dust can fill the belly of man, and whoever repents, Allah accepts his repentance. The narrator says: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked me: What do you say? The narrator says: I replied: Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to me in the same way. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Get up and come with me to him. The narrator says: Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to him and asked: What did he narrate? So Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) informed: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me in the same way.
