Chapter: Greed and Its Related Matters – Clarifying that the Ruling for Palm Trees is Like That of Wealth in This Context
Hadith 3232
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ قَحْطَبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ بَحْرٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ فُضَيْلٍ ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ أَبِي سُفِيَانَ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لَوْ أَنَّ لابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيَيْنِ مِنْ نَخْلٍ ، لابْتَغَى إِلَيْهِ ثَالِثًا ، وَلا يَمْلأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلا التُّرَابُ ، وَيَتُوبُ اللَّهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ " .
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If a man possesses two valleys of date palms, he will desire a third. Nothing fills the belly of man except dust, and whoever repents, Allah accepts his repentance."
Hadith 3233
أَخْبَرَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي شُعَيْبٍ الْحَرَّانِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ أَعِيَنَ ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ أَبِي سُفِيَانَ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ : " لَوْ كَانَ لابْنِ آدَمَ وَادٍ مِنْ نَخْلٍ ، لَتَمَنَّى إِلَيْهِ مِثْلَهُ ، وَلا يَمْلأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلا التُّرَابُ " ، لَمْ يُحَدِّثْ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي شُعَيْبٍ إِلا عُمَرُ بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ ، تَفَرَّدَ الأَعْمَشُ بِقَوْلِهِ مِنْ نَخْلٍ ، قَالَهُ الشَّيْخُ .
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) say: "If a man possesses a valley full of date-palm gardens, he would wish for another like it, and nothing will fill the belly of man except dust." Only Umar bin Saeed has narrated this from Ahmad bin Abu Shu'aib, and among the narrators, A'mash is unique in narrating it with the wording of date-palm gardens; this has been stated by the Sheikh.
