Chapter on earning wealth lawfully and related matters – Permissibility of gathering wealth lawfully if Allah’s due is paid
Hadith 3211
أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْمُثَنَّى ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ عَلِيٍّ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عَمْرَو بْنَ الْعَاصِ ، يَقُولُ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " يَا عَمْرُو ، اشْدُدْ عَلَيْكَ سِلاحَكَ وَثِيَابَكَ " ، قَالَ : فَفَعَلْتُ ، ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُهُ ، فَوَجَدْتُهُ يَتَوَضَّأُ ، فَرَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ ، فَصَعَّدَ فِيَّ النَّظَرَ وَصَوَّبَهُ ، قَالَ : " يَا عَمْرُو ، إِنِّي أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَبْعَثَكَ وَجْهًا ، فَيُسَلِّمُكَ اللَّهُ وَيُغْنِمَكَ ، وَأَزْغُبُ لَكَ مِنَ الْمَالِ زَغْبَةً صَالِحَةً " ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَمْ أُسْلِمْ رَغْبَةً فِي الْمَالِ ، إِنَّمَا أَسْلَمْتُ رَغْبَةً فِي الْجِهَادِ وَالْكَيْنُونَةِ مَعَكَ ، قَالَ : " يَا عَمْرُو ، نِعِمَّا بِالْمَالِ الصَّالِحِ مَعَ الرَّجُلِ الصَّالِحِ " .
Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Amr! Fasten your weapons and clothes upon yourself." The narrator says: I did so, then I presented myself before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I found him performing ablution. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head and looked me up and down. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Amr! I want to send you on a mission. May Allah keep you safe and grant you spoils of war, and I will also give you a share from the spoils." The narrator says: I said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I did not accept Islam out of interest in wealth; rather, I accepted Islam to participate in jihad and to be with you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Amr! Wealth is very good when it is pure and in the hands of a righteous man."
