Imam Zain al-Abidin, may Allah have mercy on him, narrates: Sayyida Umm Salama, may Allah be pleased with her, narrated this hadith to us: Once, the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, was present at the house of Sayyida Umm Salama, may Allah be pleased with her. Some of his companions were also present with him. During this time, a man came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him! What is the amount of charity (i.e., zakat) on such and such quantity of dates? The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, replied: This much. He said: So-and-so has wronged me; he has collected such and such amount from me. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: What will be the situation when rulers are imposed upon you who will wrong you even more than this? The people became worried at this. One of them said: O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him! What will become of us at that time, when a person is not present among his camels, or animals, or in his field, or in his garden, and he pays the zakat on his wealth, yet he is wronged? O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him! What should he do? The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever pays the zakat on his wealth willingly, seeking the pleasure of Allah Almighty and the reward of the Hereafter, and does not withhold anything from it, and establishes prayer and pays zakat, and then he is wronged, then he should take up his weapon, and if he is killed while fighting, he will be a martyr. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:): The meaning of this narration is: When, in the collection of zakat or in any similar situation, a person is wronged, and there are Muslims with him who support him in this matter, and sufficiency is present, and their intention is not to gain worldly benefit. This does not mean that a person should throw himself into destruction, because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari, may Allah be pleased with him: "You should act with obedience and submission, even if the ruler is an Abyssinian (black) slave with a cut nose and ears." And the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, also said: "Whoever raises a weapon against us has nothing to do with us."
