Section on martyrs – Qualities by which one attains the virtue of martyrdom without being killed in battle
Hadith 3186
أَخْبَرَنَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ مُوسَى بْنِ مُجَاشِعٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا وَهْبُ بْنُ بَقِيَّةَ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ سُهَيْلِ بْنِ أَبِي صَالِحٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَنْ تَعُدُّونَ الشُّهَدَاءَ فِيكُمْ ؟ " قَالُوا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، مَنْ قُتِلَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَهُوَ شَهِيدٌ قَالَ : " إِنَّ شُهَدَاءَ أُمَّتِي إِذًا لَقَلِيلٌ " قَالُوا : مَنْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ؟ قَالَ : " مَنْ قُتِلَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ، فَهُوَ شَهِيدٌ ، وَمَنْ مَاتَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَهُوَ شَهِيدٌ ، وَمَنْ مَاتَ فِي الطَّاعُونِ فَهُوَ شَهِيدٌ ، وَمَنْ مَاتَ فِي بَطْنٍ فَهُوَ شَهِيدٌ " ، قَالَ سُهَيْلٌ : وَأَخْبَرَنِي عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مِقْسَمٍ ، قَالَ : أَشْهَدُ عَلَى أَبِيكَ ، أَنَّهُ زَادَ فِي الْحَدِيثِ الْخَامِسَ وَمَنْ غَرِقَ فَهُوَ شَهِيدٌ .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whom do you count as martyrs among you?" The people replied: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! The one who is killed in the way of Allah is a martyr." The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In that case, the martyrs of my Ummah will be few." The people asked: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Then who (are martyrs)?" The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one who is killed in the way of Allah is a martyr, the one who dies in the way of Allah is a martyr, the one who dies due to plague is a martyr, the one who dies due to a stomach illness is a martyr." The narrator named Suhail stated: Ubaidullah bin Maqsim told me, I testify on behalf of your father that he mentioned a fifth person in the hadith: the one who drowns and dies is a martyr.
