Saeed bin Harith Ansari narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) stated that Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) was wounded. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) came to visit him along with Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him). When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived at his place, he found him in a state of unconsciousness. It was said to him, “O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! He has passed away.” Upon this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began to weep. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began to weep, the people also began to weep. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Have you not heard that Allah, the Exalted, does not punish because of the weeping of the eye or the grief of the heart, but He punishes or shows mercy because of this”—and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed to his tongue.
