Section on the state of the dead in the grave – Indicating that grave punishment may also be due to gossip
Hadith 3128
أَخْبَرَنَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ مُوسَى بْنِ مُجَاشِعٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ ، عَنْ طَاوُسٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَالَ : مَرَّ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى قَبْرَيْنِ ، فَقَالَ : " إِنَّهُمَا لَيُعَذَّبَانِ ، وَمَا يُعَذَّبَانِ فِي كَبِيرٍ " ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " بَلَى ، أَمَا أَحَدُهُمَا ، فَكَانَ يَسْعَى بِالنَّمِيمَةِ ، وَأَمَّا الآخَرُ ، فَكَانَ لا يَسْتَنْزِهُ مِنْ بَوْلِهِ " ، ثُمَّ أَخَذَ عُودًا ، فَكَسَرَهُ بِاثْنَيْنِ ، ثُمَّ غَرَزَ كُلَّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمَا عَلَى قَبْرٍ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " لَعَلَّهُ يُخَفِّفُ عَنْهُمَا الْعَذَابَ مَا لَمْ يَيْبَسَا " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by two graves and said: "They are being punished, and they are not being punished for something (that people would consider) major." Then he said: "Yes, as for one of them, he used to spread slander, and as for the other, he did not protect himself from urine." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took a branch, split it into two, and placed each piece on one of the graves. Then he said: "I have done this so that their punishment may be lightened as long as these do not dry out."
