Section on the state of the dead in the grave – The reason people do not hear the punishment of the grave
Hadith 3126
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ السَّامِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ الْمَقَابِرِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي حُمَيْدٌ الطَّوِيلُ ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، أَنَّهُ دَخَلَ حَائِطًا مِنْ حَوَائِطِ بَنِي النَّجَّارِ ، فَسَمِعَ صَوْتًا مِنْ قَبْرٍ ، قَالَ : " مَتَى دُفِنَ صَاحِبُ هَذَا الْقَبْرِ ؟ " فَقَالُوا : فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ ، فَسُرَّ بِذَلِكَ ، وَقَالَ : " لَوْلا أَنْ لا تَدَافَنُوا ، لَدَعَوْتُ اللَّهَ أَنْ يُسْمِعَكُمْ عَذَابَ الْقَبْرِ " .
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates about the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered a garden belonging to Banu Najjar. There, he (peace and blessings be upon him) heard a sound coming from a grave. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) inquired: When was this deceased person buried? The people replied: In the time of ignorance (pre-Islamic era). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became pleased at this and said: If I did not fear that you would stop burying one another, I would have asked Allah Almighty to let you hear the punishment of the grave (its sound).
