Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "When the deceased is placed in the grave, he hears the sound of the footsteps of the people as they leave him, until they depart. If the person is a believer, then the prayer comes to his head, and fasting is on his right side, zakat is on his left side, and charity, maintaining family ties, goodness, and acts of kindness towards people come to his feet. (The angels) try to come from the direction of his head, but the prayer says: 'You cannot come from my side.' Then they come from his right side, but fasting says: 'You cannot come from my side.' Then they try to come from his left side, but zakat says: 'You cannot come from my side.' Then they come from his feet, but charity, maintaining family ties, goodness, and acts of kindness say: 'You cannot come from our side.' Then it is said to the deceased: 'Sit up.' He sits up, and it seems to him as if the sun is about to set. He is asked: 'What do you say about this man who was among you? What do you say about him, and what testimony do you give about him?' He says: 'Give me a chance so that I may pray.' The angels say: 'You will do that, but tell us about what we have asked you: This man who was among you, what do you say about him, and what testimony do you give about him?' The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: The person says: 'This is Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). I bear witness that he is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and he came with the truth from Allah.' Then it is said to him: 'You lived upon this belief, and you died upon this belief, and if Allah wills, you will be resurrected upon this belief.' Then a door to Paradise is opened for him, and it is said to him: 'This is your place in Paradise, and this is what Allah has prepared for you in Paradise.' So his longing and joy increase. Then a door to Hell is opened before him, and it is said to him: 'If you had disobeyed this (Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), this would have been your place, and Allah had prepared these things for you in it.' So his longing and joy increase. Then his grave is expanded for him by seventy cubits, and light is placed for him in the grave. His body is returned to the state in which it began, and then he is placed in a pure body, which is in the form of a bird, hanging from a tree in Paradise. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: This is what is meant by the saying of Allah: 'Allah keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word, in the worldly life and in the Hereafter...' (to the end of the verse). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: When the disbeliever is approached from the direction of his head (i.e., the angel tries to come to him), there is nothing there. Then he is approached from his right side, but there is nothing there. Then he is approached from his left side, but there is nothing there. Then he is approached from his feet, but there is nothing there. Then it is said to him: 'Sit up.' So he sits up, frightened and overwhelmed. He is asked: 'What do you say about this man who was among you? What do you say about him, and what testimony do you give about him?' He asks: 'Which man?' Then it is said to him: 'The one who was among you,' but he is not told his name, until it is said to him: 'We are asking about Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).' So the person says: 'I do not know. I heard people saying something, so I said what they said.' Then it is said to him: 'You lived upon this belief, and you died upon this belief, and if Allah wills, you will be resurrected upon this belief.' Then a door to Hell is opened for him, and it is said to him: 'This is your place in Hell, and this is what Allah has prepared for you in Hell.' So his regret and sorrow increase. Then a door to Paradise is opened for him, and it is said: 'If you had obeyed this (Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), this Paradise would have been your place, and what Allah has prepared for you in it would have been yours.' So his regret and sorrow increase. Then his grave is constricted for him until his ribs are pressed together. This is the constricted life about which Allah has said: 'Indeed, for him is a constricted life, and We will raise him blind on the Day of Resurrection.'"
