Section on the funeral prayer – Recommendation to seek Allah’s protection for the deceased from the punishment of the grave and Hellfire
Hadith 3074
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُعَافَى الْعَابِدُ بِصَيدَا ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عُثْمَانَ الْقُرَشِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ، عَنْ مَرْوَانَ بْنِ جُنَاحٍ ، عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ مَيْسَرَةَ بْنِ حَلْبَسٍ ، عَنْ وَاثِلَةَ بْنِ الأَسْقَعِ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، أَنَّهُ صَلَّى عَلَى رَجُلٍ فَقَالَ : " اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّ فُلانَ بْنَ فُلانٍ فِي ذِمَّتِكَ ، وَحَبْلِ جِوَارِكَ فَأَعِذْهُ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْقَبْرِ ، وَعَذَابِ النَّارِ ، أَنْتَ أَهْلُ الْوَفَاءِ وَالْحَقِّ ، اللَّهُمَّ فَاغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ " .
Sayyiduna Wathilah bin Asqa’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates regarding the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered the funeral prayer of a person and supplicated: “O Allah! Indeed, so-and-so son of so-and-so (i.e., this deceased) is under Your responsibility and in the shelter of Your mercy, so protect him from the trial of the grave and the punishment of Hellfire. You are most worthy of fulfilling (Your responsibility). O Allah! Forgive him, have mercy on him. Indeed, You are the Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.”
