Section on the funeral prayer – Recommendation to ask Allah to increase the good deeds and forgive the sins of the deceased
Hadith 3073
أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْمُثَنَّى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا وَهْبُ بْنُ بَقِيَّةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ كَانَ إِذَا صَلَّى عَلَى جَنَازَةٍ ، يَقُولُ : " اللَّهُمَّ عَبْدُكَ ، وَابْنُ عَبْدِكَ كَانَ يَشْهَدُ أَنْ لا إِلَهَ إِلا اللَّهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُكَ وَرَسُولُكَ ، وَأَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ بِهِ مِنِّي ، إِنْ كَانَ مُحْسِنًا فَزِدْ فِي إِحْسَانِهِ ، وَإِنْ كَانَ مُسِيئًا فَاغْفِرْ لَهُ ، وَلا تَحْرِمْنَا أَجْرَهُ ، وَلا تَفْتِنَّا بَعْدَهُ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates about the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): When he (peace be upon him) performed the funeral prayer, he would recite this supplication: "O Allah! (This deceased) is Your servant, the son of Your servant. He used to bear witness that there is no deity except Allah and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is Your servant and Your Messenger. You know more about him than I do. If he is good, then increase him in goodness, and if he is bad, then forgive him. Do not deprive us of his reward and do not subject us to trial after him."
