Section on the funeral prayer – Permissibility of increasing the number of takbirs in the funeral prayer
Hadith 3069
أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْمُثَنَّى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْجَعْدِ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ ابْنُ أَبِي لَيْلَى ، قَالَ : كَانَ زَيْدُ بْنُ أَرْقَمَ ، يُكَبِّرُ عَلَى جَنَائِزِنَا أَرْبَعًا ، ثُمَّ يُكَبِّرُ خَمْسًا ، فَسَأَلْنَاهُ عَنْ ذَلِكَ ، فَقَالَ : " كَبَّرَهَا ، أَوْ كَبَّرَهُنَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " .
Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila reports: Sayyiduna Zaid bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say four takbirs in our funeral (prayers), then he started saying five takbirs. We asked him about this, so he informed us: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did this (i.e., the fifth takbir)—the narrator is in doubt, perhaps these are the words—that he (the Prophet) also said (five takbirs).
