Section on the funeral prayer – Permissibility of praying over any Muslim, even if in debt
Hadith 3064
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الأَزْدِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لا يُصَلِّي عَلَى رَجُلٍ مَاتَ وَعَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ ، فَأُتِيَ بِمَيِّتٍ فَقَالَ : " أَعَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ ؟ " فَقَالُوا : نَعَمْ دِينَارَانِ ، فَقَالَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ " ، فَقَالَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ : هُمَا عَلَيَّ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ ، فَلَمَّا فَتْحَ اللَّهُ عَلَى رَسُولِهِ قَالَ : " أَنَا أَوْلَى بِكُلِّ مُؤْمِنٍ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ ، فَمَنْ تَرَكَ دَيْنًا فَعَلَيَّ وَمَنْ تَرَكَ مَالا فَلِوَرَثَتِهِ " .
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) would not perform the funeral prayer for a person who died while having debt upon him. Once, a deceased was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He asked: "Does he have any debt?" The people replied: "Yes, he owes two dinars." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You people perform the funeral prayer of your companion." Then Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I take responsibility for its payment." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed his funeral prayer. When Allah Almighty granted His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) conquests, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am closer to every believer than his own self. So whoever leaves behind a debt, its payment is my responsibility, and whoever leaves behind wealth, it will go to his heirs."
