Section on the funeral prayer – A narration that may seem to contradict the first two mentioned
Hadith 3060
أَخْبَرَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَوْهَبٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، أَنَّ رَجُلا أُتِيَ بِهِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، لِيُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهِ ، فَقَالَ : " صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ فَإِنَّ عَلَيْهِ دَيْنًا " ، فَقَالَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ : أَنَا أَكْفُلُ بِهِ قَالَ : " بِالْوَفَاءِ ؟ " قَالَ : بِالْوَفَاءِ ، فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَكَانَ عَلَيْهِ ثَمَانِيَةَ عَشَرَ ، أَوْ سَبْعَةَ عَشَرَ دِرْهَمًا .
Abdullah bin Abu Qatadah narrates from his father: The body of a man was brought to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) so that he (peace be upon him) could perform his funeral prayer. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: You people perform the funeral prayer of your companion, for he is under debt. So Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I take responsibility for it. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked: The full payment? He replied: The full payment. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed the funeral prayer of that person. The narrator states: That person owed eighteen or perhaps seventeen dirhams.
