Section on the funeral prayer – Clarifying that Abu Qatadah meant “they are upon me”
Hadith 3059
أَخْبَرَنَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ مُوسَى بْنِ مُجَاشِعٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بِشْرٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ بْنِ رِبْعِيٍّ ، قَالَ : أُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، بِجِنَازَةٍ لِيُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهَا ، وَقَالَ : " عَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ ؟ " قَالُوا : عَلَيْهِ دِينَارَانِ ، فَقَالَ : " صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ " قَالَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ : إِلَيَّ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هُمَا عَلَيَّ ، فَتَقَدَّمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ .
Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah bin Rabi’i (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A funeral was brought before the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) so that he might lead the funeral prayer. The Prophet (peace be upon him) inquired: “Does he have any debt?” The people replied: “He owes two dinars.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “You perform the funeral prayer of your companion.” Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! The payment of these two (dinars) is upon me.” So the Prophet (peace be upon him) stepped forward and led the funeral prayer for him.
