Section on standing for the funeral – Instruction to sit upon seeing the bier after previously being told to stand
Hadith 3056
أَخْبَرَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ سِنَانٍ الْقَطَّانُ بِوَاسِطَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَلاءِ بْنِ كُرَيْبٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَةُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا وَاقِدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ سَعْدِ بْنِ مُعَاذٍ ، قَالَ : شَهِدْتُ جَنَازَةً فِي بَنِي سَلِمَةَ ، فَقُمْتُ ، فَقَالَ لِي نَافِعُ بْنُ جُبَيْرٍ ، اجْلِسْ ، فَإِنِّي سَأُخْبِرُكَ فِي هَذَا بِثَبْتٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي مَسْعُودُ بْنُ الْحَكَمِ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عَلِيًّا ، بِرَحْبَةِ الْكُوفَةِ يَقُولُ لِلنَّاسِ : " كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَأْمُرُنَا بِالْقِيَامِ فِي الْجَنَازَةِ ، ثُمَّ جَلَسَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ ، وَأَمَرَ بِالْجُلُوسِ " .
Waqid bin Amr narrates: I attended a funeral in the locality of Banu Salamah. I stood up, so Nafi’ bin Jubair said to me: Sit down, for I will tell you an authentic narration about this. Mas’ud bin Hakam narrated this hadith to me: He heard Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) in the field of Kufa telling the people that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) had first commanded us to stand for the funeral, then afterwards he (peace be upon him) would remain seated upon seeing the funeral and (he, peace be upon him, also) commanded us to remain seated.
