Lady Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) arrived in Madinah, some women of the Ansar gathered in a house. The Prophet (peace be upon him) sent Umar ibn Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) to us; he stood at the door and greeted us with salam. We replied to the salam. Then he said: I am the messenger of Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) who has come to you. Lady Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: We said: Welcome to Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) and to the messenger of Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him). Then Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You women should pledge that you will not associate anything with Allah, nor commit adultery, nor steal. He recited this verse. Lady Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: We replied: Yes. Lady Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: He extended his hand from the outer part of the house and we extended our hands from the inner part of the house. Then he said: O Allah! Bear witness. Lady Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet (peace be upon him) commanded us regarding Eid that we should bring out even the adult and free women on this occasion, but Jumu’ah is not obligatory upon us women, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade us from accompanying funeral processions. The narrator named Ismail says: I asked my grandmother (Lady Umm Atiyyah, may Allah be pleased with her) about the statement of Allah the Exalted: “And that they will not disobey you in what is right.” She said: The Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade us from wailing.
