Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: I was present with Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) when his last moments approached, so I recited this verse: "The one whose tears always remain held back, soon they will burst forth." Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O my daughter! Do not say this, rather recite this (which is a verse from the Qur'an): "The stupor of death has come in truth; this is what you were trying to avoid." Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) inquired: In how many garments was the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) shrouded? I replied: In three garments. So he said: Shroud me in these two of my garments and buy a new cloth along with them, because a living person is more in need of new clothes than a deceased one. These are working clothes (the narrator is in doubt, perhaps these are the words) or clothes for respite.
