Section on washing the deceased – Clarifying that Umm Atiyyah combed the Prophet’s hair by his command, not on her own
Hadith 3032
أَخْبَرَنَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ مُوسَى بْنِ مُجَاشِعٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ حِسَابٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ سِيرِينَ ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ ، قَالَتْ : دَخَلَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَنَحْنُ نَغْسِلُ ابْنَتَهُ ، فَقَالَ : " اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلاثًا ، أَوْ خَمْسًا ، أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكَ بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ ، وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا ، أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ ، فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَآذِنَّنِي " ، قَالَتْ : فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا ، آذَنَّاهُ ، قَالَتْ : فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حِقْوَهُ ، وَقَالَ : " أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ " . قَالَ : وَقَالَتْ قَالَ : وَقَالَتْ حَفْصَةُ ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ : اغْسِلْنَهَا مَرَّتَيْنِ ، أَوْ ثَلاثًا ، أَوْ خَمْسًا ، أَوْ سَبْعًا ، قَالَتْ أُمُّ عَطِيَّةَ : وَمَشَطْتُهَا ثَلاثَةَ قُرُونٍ ، وَكَانَ فِيهِ أَنَّهُ قَالَ : " ابْدَأْنَ بِمَيَامِنِهَا وَمَوَاضِعِ الْوُضُوءِ " ، قَالَ أَبُو حَاتِمٍ : الأَمْرُ بِغُسْلِ الْمَيِّتِ فَرْضٌ ، وَالشَّرْطُ الَّذِي قُرِنَ بِهِ هُوَ الْعَدَدُ الْمَذْكُورُ فِي الْخَبَرِ قُصِدَ بِتَعْيِينِهِ النَّدْبُ لا الْحَتْمُ . أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى ، حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْحَجَّاجِ السَّامِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ ، وَهِشَامٍ ، وَحَبِيبٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ ، قَالَتْ : تُوُفِّيَتِ ابْنَةٌ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ : " اغْسِلْنَهَا بِالْمَاءِ ، وَالسِّدْرِ ثَلاثًا ، أَوْ خَمْسًا ، أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنَّ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكَ ، وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي آخِرِهِنَّ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ ، فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَآذِنَّنِي " ، فَآذَنَّاهُ ، فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حِقْوَهُ ، وَقَالَ : " أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ " ، قَالَ أَيُّوبُ ، وَقَالَتْ حَفْصَةُ : " اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلاثًا ، أَوْ خَمْسًا ، أَوْ سَبْعًا ، وَاجْعَلْنَ لَهَا ثَلاثَةَ قُرُونٍ " .
Lady Umm ‘Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us while we were washing his daughter. He said: Wash her with water and lote tree leaves three times, or five times, or more than that if you see fit, and at the end add camphor (the narrator is unsure, perhaps these are the words), add some camphor. When you have finished, inform me. Lady Umm ‘Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: When we finished and informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he gave us his cloak and said: Wrap her body in this. A woman named Hafsah narrated from Lady Umm ‘Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) with these words: Wash her two times, or three times, or five times, or seven times. Lady Umm ‘Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: I made three braids for that daughter. In this narration, these words are also present: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Start washing her from the right side and the places of ablution.” (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The command to wash the deceased is obligatory, and the condition mentioned along with it. That is, specifying the number mentioned in this narration is for recommendation. It is not obligatory.
Hadith 3033
Lady Umm ‘Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: When the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Wash her with water and lotus leaves three times, or five times, or, if you think appropriate, more than that, and add some camphor at the end. When you finish, inform me.” We informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he gave us his sheet and said: “Wrap her body in this.” The narrator named Ayyub reported this. The female narrator named Hafsah added these words: “Wash her three times, or five times, or seven times, and make her hair into three braids.”
