Abu Aswad Daili narrates: I came to Madinah where an epidemic had spread, causing deaths to occur rapidly. I was sitting with Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) when a funeral passed by. Good things were said about the deceased, so Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "It has become obligatory." Then another funeral passed by, and bad things were said about the deceased, so Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "It has become obligatory." Abu Aswad asked: "O Commander of the Faithful! What has become obligatory?" He replied: "It is exactly as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'If four people testify to the goodness of any Muslim, Allah will admit him to Paradise.' So we asked: 'What if three testify?' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Even if three testify, this reward will be granted.' The narrator says: We asked: 'What if two testify?' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Even if two testify (this reward will be granted).'" (Sayyiduna Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, says) We did not ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about one person.
