Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): When the final moment of a believer approaches, the angels of mercy come to him. When his soul is taken, it is placed in a white garment. The angels then take it towards the gate of the sky. The (angels of the first heaven) say: We have never smelled a fragrance purer than this. Then it is said: Leave him, he has attained comfort, for previously he was in the grief (of the world). Then it is asked: What deed did so-and-so do? What deed did so-and-so do? And what deed did such-and-such woman do? And when the soul of a disbeliever is taken, it is brought to the gate of the earth. The guardians of the earth say: We have never smelled anything more foul than this. Then they take it to the lowest layer of the earth. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) states: "The souls of the people of faith are gathered in 'Jabiyateen', and the souls of the disbelievers are gathered in 'Barahoot', which is a barren land in Hadramaut." (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) This narration has been transmitted by Mu'adh bin Hisham from his father, from Qatadah, from Qasamah bin Zuhair, from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), as a marfu' narration in a similar manner. Jabiyateen is in Yemen, and Barahoot is a region on the outskirts of Yemen.
