Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Previously, it was our practice that when a person's final moments approached, we would inform the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) about it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would come to that person and continue to supplicate for his forgiveness, until when he passed away, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions would return. Sometimes, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had to stay for quite a while. I became concerned that this might cause difficulty for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so someone said to another: "By Allah! Now we will not inform the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about anyone until he has passed away. When he passes away, then we will inform the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so that he does not have to face hardship in this regard and does not have to stay for a long time." The narrator says: We did exactly that. After that, we started informing the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) after the person had passed away. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would come to that person, supplicate for mercy for him, and supplicate for his forgiveness. Sometimes, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would return immediately, and sometimes he would stay until the deceased was buried. The narrator says: We continued to do this for a while, then we thought, "By Allah! Now we will not call the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), rather we will carry our dead to the funeral, so that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) can perform the funeral prayer near his house. This will be easier and more convenient for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." So we started doing this, and it has continued like this until today.
