The Dying Person
Hadith 3002
أَخْبَرَنَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ مُوسَى بْنِ مُجَاشِعٍ السَّخْتِيَانِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ خَلادٍ الْبَاهِلِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى الْقَطَّانُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ التَّيْمِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عُثْمَانَ ، عَنْ مَعْقِلِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " اقْرَؤُوا عَلَى مَوْتَاكُمْ يس " ، قَالَ أَبُو حَاتِمٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : قَوْلُهُ : " اقْرَؤُوا عَلَى مَوْتَاكُمْ يس " أَرَادَ بِهِ مَنْ حَضَرَتْهُ الْمَنِيَّةُ لا أَنَّ الْمَيِّتَ يُقْرَأُ عَلَيْهِ وَكَذَلِكَ قَوْلُهُ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لَقِّنُوا مَوْتَاكُمْ لا إِلَهَ إِلا اللَّهُ " .
Sayyiduna Ma'qil bin Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Recite Surah Yasin over your dying ones." (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), "Recite it over your dead," means: Recite Surah Yasin over the person whose final moments have approached, because recitation is not done over the dead. Similarly, the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Instruct your dead to say La ilaha illallah" (i.e., instruct those near death to say it).
