Ibn Hibban

Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaidullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Two men from the area called "Bali" came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Both of them accepted Islam together. One of them was more diligent than the other. The one who was more diligent participated in battle and attained martyrdom. The other man lived for another year, during which he also fasted in Ramadan, and then he passed away. Once, Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaidullah (may Allah be pleased with him) saw in a dream that a person came out from Paradise and permitted entry to the one who had died later among the two. Then that person came out from Paradise again and permitted entry to the one who had been martyred. Then he returned to Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "You go back, your time has not yet come." The next day, Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) discussed this matter with people. News of this reached the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). The people informed him and expressed their amazement. They said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! That person was more diligent among the two and he was also martyred in the way of Allah, but this (other one) entered Paradise before him." The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Did he not live for another year after him?" The people replied: "Yes." The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Did he not witness the month of Ramadan and fast in it, and did he not offer so many prayers in the mosque throughout the year?" The people replied: "Yes." The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is why the difference between them is greater than the distance between the sky and the earth." The narrator named Abu Salamah passed away in 94 Hijri, while Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred in the Battle of Jamal in the year 36 Hijri.
