Patience and Reward for Illness and Afflictions - Clarification that the stronger one's faith, the greater the trials
Hadith 2920
أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْمُثَنَّى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الطَّالَقَانِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ ، عَنِ الْعَلاءِ بْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ سَعْدٍ ، قَالَ : سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، أَيُّ النَّاسِ أَشَدُّ بَلاءً ؟ قَالَ : " الأَنْبِيَاءُ ، ثُمَّ الأَمْثَلُ فَالأَمْثَلُ ، يُبْتَلَى النَّاسُ عَلَى قَدْرِ دِينِهِمْ ، فَمَنْ ثَخُنَ دِينُهُ ، اشْتَدَّ بَلاؤُهُ ، وَمَنْ ضَعُفَ دِينُهُ ضَعُفَ بَلاؤُهُ ، وَإِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لِيُصِيبَهُ الْبَلاءُ حَتَّى يَمْشِيَ فِي النَّاسِ مَا عَلَيْهِ خَطِيئَةٌ " .
Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: It was asked from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Who faces the most severe trials? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The Prophets, then those closest to them (the righteous), and people are tested according to the strength of their religion. The one whose religion is strong, his trial is severe; the one whose religion is weak, his trial is also weak. A person remains in trial until he walks among the people and there is no sin upon him (i.e., due to the trial, his sins are forgiven).
