Rain Prayer - Recommendation for the imam to seek rain through the righteous, hoping for answered prayers
Hadith 2861
أَخْبَرَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الأَنْصَارِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ، عَنْ ثُمَامَةَ ، عَنِ أَنَسٍ ، قَالَ : " كَانُوا إِذَا قَحَطُوا عَلَى عَهْدِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، اسْتَسْقَوْا بِالنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَيَسْتَسْقِي لَهُمْ فَيُسْقَوْنَ ، فَلَمَّا كَانَ بَعْدَ وَفَاةِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فِي إِمَارَةِ عُمَرَ ، قَحَطُوا ، فَخَرَجَ عُمَرُ بِالْعَبَّاسِ يَسْتَسْقِي بِهِ ، فَقَالَ : " اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا كُنَّا إِذَا قَحَطْنَا عَلَى عَهْدِ نَبِيِّكَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَاسْتَسْقُينَا بِهِ ، فَسَقَيْتَنَا ، وإِنا نَتَوَسَّلُ إِلَيْكَ الْيَوْمَ بِعَمِّ نَبِيِّكَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَاسْقِنَا قَالَ : فَسُقُوا " .
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: In the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when there was a drought, people would supplicate for rain through the means of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would also supplicate for rain for those people, and they would be granted rain. After the passing of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), a drought occurred, so Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went out taking Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) along, so that they could supplicate for rain through his means. He said: "O Allah! Previously, when we were afflicted with drought in the time of Your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), we would supplicate for rain through the means of Your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and You would grant us rain. Now we supplicate to You through the means of the uncle of Your Prophet, so grant us rain." The narrator says: They were granted rain.
