Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once, there was no rain for a whole year, so some Muslims stood before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), there has been no rain, the land has dried up, and the crops are being destroyed. The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised both his hands; we could not see any clouds in the sky. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spread both his hands until the whiteness of his armpits became visible to us, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed to Allah Almighty for rain. We had not yet performed Jumu'ah (Friday prayer) when such heavy rain began that a young man whose house was near the mosque intended to go home. Then it rained the entire week. When the next Friday came, a man said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), houses are collapsing and it is no longer possible to travel. The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled at the hastiness of the son of Adam, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) raised both his hands and prayed: O Allah! Let it be around us, not upon us. The narrator says: The clouds cleared from over Madinah Munawwarah.
