Eclipse Prayer - What one should do upon witnessing an eclipse: repent or do good deeds
Hadith 2854
أَخْبَرَنَا أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الأَزْدِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : " كُنَّا نَرَى الآيَاتِ فِي زَمَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَرَكَاتٍ ، وَأَنْتُمْ تَرَوْنَهَا تَخْوِيفًا " ، قَالَ أَبُو حَاتِمٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : خَبَرُ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ عَنْ طَاوُسٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، صَلَّى فِي كُسُوفِ الشَّمْسِ ثَمَانِيَ رَكَعَاتٍ وَأَرْبَعَ سَجَدَاتٍ ، لَيْسَ بِصَحِيحٍ لأَنَّ حَبِيبًا لَمْ يَسْمَعْ مِنْ طَاوُسٍ هَذَا الْخَبَرَ ، وَكَذَلِكَ خَبَرُ عَلِيٍّ رِضْوَانُ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ ، أَنَّهُ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، صَلَّى فِي صَلاةِ الْكُسُوفِ هَذَا النَّحْوَ ، لأَنَا لا نَحْتَجَّ بِحَنَشٍ وَأَمْثَالِهِ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ ، وَكَذَلِكَ أَغْضَيْنَا عَنْ إِمْلائِهِ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: In the blessed era of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), we used to consider the (apparent) signs as a sign of blessing, whereas you consider them as something to frighten. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) Habib bin Abu Thabit has narrated this report from Tawus, from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed eight bowings (ruku) in the solar eclipse prayer and four prostrations (sajdah). This narration is not authentic because Habib did not hear this narration from Tawus. Similarly, the narration attributed to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed the eclipse prayer in this manner is also not correct, because we do not use the ahadith of narrators like Hanish and those similar to him as evidence. Likewise, we also disregard the narrations dictated by them.
