Eclipse Prayer - Clarification that "pray" here means to perform the prayer as described
Hadith 2835
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ ، قَالَ : كُنَّا عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَكَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ ، فَقَامَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، عَجْلانًا إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ فَجَرَ إِزَارَهُ ، أَوْ ثَوْبَهُ ، وَثَّابَ إِلَيْهِ النَاسٌ ، فَصَلَّى بِهِمْ رَكْعَتَيْنِ نَحْوَ مَا تُصَلُّونَ ، ثُمَّ جُلِّيَ عَنْهَا ، فَأَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَثَّابَ إِلَيْهِ النَّاسُ ، فَقَالَ : " إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ يُخَوِّفُ بِهِمَا عِبَادَهُ ، وَإِنَّهُمَا لا يَنْكَسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ مِنَ النَّاسِ ، وَكَانَ ابْنُهُ تُوُفِّيَ ، فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ مِنْهَا شَيْئًا ، فَصَلُّوا حَتَّى يَكْشِفَ مَا بِكُمْ " ، قَالَ أَبُو حَاتِمٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : قَوْلُ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ : فَصَلَّى بِهِمْ رَكْعَتَيْنِ نَحْوَ مَا تُصَلُّونَ ، أَرَادَ بِهِ تُصَلُّونَ صَلاةَ الْكُسُوفِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ فِي أَرْبَعِ رَكَعَاتٍ ، وَأَرْبَعِ سَجَدَاتٍ عَلَى حَسَبِ مَا تَقَدَّمَ ذِكْرُنَا لَهُ .
Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were present with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) when a solar eclipse occurred. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) hurriedly went inside the mosque, dragging his lower garment (the narrator is unsure, perhaps these are the words: he was dragging his garment). People also gathered around him. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) led them in two units of prayer, just as you perform prayer. The eclipse ended. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards the people, and they gathered around him. He said: Indeed, the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah, by which Allah causes fear in His servants. These two do not eclipse because of anyone’s death. (The narrator says) The son of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) had passed away. (The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said) When you see any of these things (i.e., when you see an eclipse), then keep performing prayer until the eclipse ends. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The statement of Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) led them in two units of prayer, just as you perform prayer, means: just as you perform two units of prayer for the eclipse, in which there are four bowings (ruku) and four prostrations (sujood), as we have mentioned earlier.
