Sayyiduna Mughira bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: During the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), there was a solar eclipse. This happened on the day when (the son of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) Sayyiduna Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away. People said: This eclipse has occurred because of the death of Sayyiduna Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him). So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Indeed, the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse because of anyone’s death or life. When you see them (in the state of eclipse), supplicate and perform prayer until they become clear.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates regarding the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): (He said:) "Indeed, the sun and the moon do not eclipse because of anyone’s death or life, rather both are signs from Allah Almighty. When you see either of them (in the state of eclipse), then perform prayer." (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The command to perform prayer at the time of a solar or lunar eclipse means that if either one of them is eclipsed, prayer should be performed. It is not the case that the command to perform prayer is only when both are eclipsed at the same time.

Hadith Gradingفضيلة الشيخ الإمام محمد ناصر الدين الألبانيصحيح - «جزء الكسوف»: ق.فضيلة الشيخ العلّامة شُعيب الأرناؤوطإسناده صحيح على شرط مسلم
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: During the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), there was a solar eclipse. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and we stood up following him. Then he said: "O people! Indeed, the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah. If either of them is eclipsed, then come to the mosques (that is, perform the eclipse prayer)." (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) In this narration, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has commanded to perform prayer at the time of a solar or lunar eclipse, and this is the intended purpose. So here, the purpose has been mentioned in absolute terms with its cause, and that is the mosques, because prayer is performed in the mosque. It is not that merely coming to the mosque at the time of a solar or lunar eclipse will suffice if the prayer is not performed.
