Chapter on Friday Prayer - Denial of the reward of Friday for one who engages in idle talk during the sermon
Hadith 2794
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الرَّبِيعِ الزَّهْرَانِيُّ ، وَعَبْدُ الأَعْلَى بْنُ حَمَّادٍ ، قَالا : حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ الْقُمِّيُّ ، عَنْ عِيسَى بْنِ جَارِيَةَ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : دَخَلَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ ، الْمَسْجِدَ وَالنَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَخْطُبُ فَجَلَسَ إِلَى جَنْبِ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ ، فَسَأَلَهُ عَنْ شَيْءٍ ، أَوْ كَلَّمَهُ عَنْ شَيْءٍ ، فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِ ، فَظَنَّ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ أَنَّهَا مَوْجِدَةٌ ، فَلَمَّا انْفَتَلَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ صَلاتِهِ ، قَالَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ : يَا أُبَيُّ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ ؟ قَالَ : إِنَّكَ لَمْ تَحْضُرْ مَعَنَا الْجُمُعَةَ ، قَالَ : بِمَ ؟ قَالَ : تَكَلَّمْتَ وَالنَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَخْطُبُ ، فَقَامَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ ، فَدَخَلَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ لَهُ ، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " صَدَقَ أُبَيُّ ، أَطِعْ أُبَيًّا " ، هَذَا لَفْظُ عَبْدِ الأَعْلَى .
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) entered the mosque while the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was delivering the sermon. He sat beside Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka’b (may Allah be pleased with him). He asked him about something, or spoke to him about something, but Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) did not answer him. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) thought perhaps Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka’b (may Allah be pleased with him) was upset about something. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) finished the prayer, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Ubayy! What is the reason you did not answer me? Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You did not join us in the Friday (congregation). Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Why is that? Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The reason is that you spoke during the sermon of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and went to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and mentioned this matter before him. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him: Ubayy has spoken the truth; follow what Ubayy has said. These are the words as narrated by Abdul A’la.
