Section on Prayer During Travel - Narration indicating that one intending a journey as described may shorten prayer after leaving the town’s houses
Hadith 2745
أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْمُثَنَّى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا غُنْدَرٌ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ يَزِيدَ الْهُنَائِيِّ ، قَالَ : سَأَلْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ عَنْ قَصْرِ الصَّلاةِ ، فَقَالَ : " كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا خَرَجَ مَسِيرَةَ ثَلاثَةِ أَمْيَالٍ ، أَوْ ثَلاثَةِ فَرَاسِخَ ، شُعْبَةُ الشَّاكُّ ، صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ " .
Yahya bin Yazid Hudnai reports: I asked Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) about the shortened prayer (Qasr Salah): He replied: Whenever the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) set out on a journey of three miles (the narrator is in doubt, perhaps the words are:) three farsakh, he would perform two rak‘ahs. This doubt is from the narrator named Shu‘bah.
