Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates this statement of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him: "Whoever forgets to perform a prayer, then when he remembers it, he should perform it; its expiation is only this." (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The statement of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, "when he remembers it, he should perform it; its expiation is only this," contains evidence that if another person performs the prayer on his behalf, it will not be valid, because the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "because its expiation is only this." By this, the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, meant that its expiation is that when he remembers it, he himself should perform it. This contains evidence that if a person dies and there are some prayers due upon him which he could not perform during his illness, then it will not be permissible to give wheat to the poor in exchange for those prayers, or to give any other grain or anything else.
