Section on Night Prayer - Mention of the Prophet (peace be upon him) praying night prayer sitting
Hadith 2631
أَخْبَرَنَا حَامِدٌ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ الْبَلْخِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْقَوَارِيرِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَيُّوبُ ، وَبُدَيْلٌ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ شَقِيقٍ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ، أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ : " كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي لَيْلا طَوِيلا قَائِمًا ، وَلَيْلا طَوِيلا قَاعِدًا ، فَإِذَا صَلَّى قَائِمًا رَكَعَ قَائِمًا ، وَإِذَا صَلَّى قَاعِدًا رَكَعَ قَاعِدًا " .
Sayyidah Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to perform long prayers at night while standing, and he also used to perform long prayers while sitting. When he performed the prayer standing, he would go into bowing (ruku) from the standing position, and when he performed the prayer sitting, he would go into bowing from the sitting position.
