Section on Night Prayer - Mention that the Prophet (peace be upon him) prolonged the first two units more than the subsequent ones after starting night prayer with two light units
Hadith 2608
أَخْبَرَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ قَيْسِ بْنِ مَخْرَمَةَ ، ، أَنَّهُ أَخْبَرَهُ ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ الْجُهَنِيِّ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : لأَرْمُقَنَّ صَلاةَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ اللَّيْلَةَ ، قَالَ : فَتَوَسَّدْتُ عَتَبَتَهُ ، أَوْ فُسْطَاطَهُ ، " فَقَامَ فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ خَفِيفَتَيْنِ ، ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ طَوِيلَتَيْنِ طَوِيلَتَيْنِ طَوِيلَتَيْنِ ، ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ دُونَ اللَّتَيْنِ قَبْلَهُمَا ، ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ دُونَ اللَّتَيْنِ قَبْلَهُمَا ، ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ دُونَ اللَّتَيْنِ قَبْلَهُمَا ، ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ دُونَ اللَّتَيْنِ قَبْلَهُمَا ، ثُمَّ أَوْتَرَ ، فَذَلِكَ ثَلاثَ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً " .
Sayyiduna Zaid bin Khalid Al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: He thought, tonight I will observe the prayer of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). He says: I sat leaning against the door (perhaps these are the words) outside the tent of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and performed two short rak‘ahs, then he performed two rak‘ahs which were long, then he performed two rak‘ahs which were a little shorter than the previous two rak‘ahs, then he performed two rak‘ahs which were a little shorter than the two before them, then he performed two rak‘ahs which were a little shorter than those two rak‘ahs, then he performed Witr, making a total of thirteen rak‘ahs.
