Section on Night Prayer - Mention of the permissibility for the night worshipper to ask Allah at verses of mercy and seek refuge at verses of punishment
Hadith 2604
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ بْنِ يُوسُفَ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَيْدَةَ ، عَنِ الْمُسْتَوْرِدِ بْنِ الأَحْنَفِ ، عَنْ صِلَةَ بْنِ زُفَرَ ، عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ ، قَالَ : " صَلَّيْتُ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ ، فَمَا مَرَّ بِآيَةِ رَحْمَةٍ إِلا وَقَفَ عِنْدَهَا وَسَأَلَ ، وَلا مَرَّ بِآيَةِ عَذَابٍ إِلا وَقَفَ عِنْدَهَا وَتَعَوَّذَ " .
Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: One night I performed prayer behind the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Whenever he recited a verse mentioning mercy, he would pause and ask for that mercy, and whenever he recited a verse mentioning punishment, he would pause and seek refuge from it.
