Section on Night Prayer - Mention of the Prophet (peace be upon him) asking his Lord for guidance to the truth at the start of night prayer
Hadith 2600
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ خُزَيْمَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ يُونُسَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عِكْرِمَةُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو سَلَمَةَ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ ، قَالَ : سَأَلْتُ عَائِشَةَ أُمَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ : بِأَيِّ شَيْءٍ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَفْتَتِحُ صَلاتَهُ إِذَا قَامَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ ؟ قَالَتْ : كَانَ إِذَا قَامَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ افْتَتَحَ صَلاتَهُ : " اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ جِبْرِيلَ ، وَمِيكَائِيلَ ، وَإِسْرَافِيلَ ، فَاطِرَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ ، عَالِمَ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ ، أَنْتَ تَحْكُمُ بَيْنَ عِبَادِكَ فِيمَا كَانُوا فِيهِ يَخْتَلِفُونَ ، اهْدِنِي لَمَا اخْتُلِفَ فِيهِ مِنَ الْحَقِّ ، فَإِنَّكَ تَهْدِي مَنْ تَشَاءُ إِلَى صِرَاطٍ مُسْتَقِيمٍ " .
Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman reports: I asked Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her), "When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would wake up at night, with what would he begin his prayer?" She replied: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would stand for prayer at night, at the beginning of his prayer (he would recite this supplication): "O Allah! Lord of Jibreel, Mikaeel, and Israfeel! O Creator of the heavens and the earth, O Knower of the unseen and the seen, You will judge between Your servants concerning that wherein they differ. Guide me to the truth concerning that which is disputed, for surely You guide whom You will to the straight path."
