Section on night prayer – mentioning the instruction to pray two rak’ahs after Witr for one who fears not waking up for night prayer while traveling
Hadith 2577
أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ قُتَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَرْمَلَةُ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ ، عَنْ شُرَيْحٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ نُفَيْرٍ ، عَنْ ثَوْبَانَ ، قَالَ : كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي سَفَرٍ ، فَقَالَ : " إِنَّ هَذَا السَّفَرَ جُهْدٌ وَثُقْلٌ ، فَإِذَا أَوْتَرَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَرْكَعْ رَكْعَتَيْنِ ، فَإِنِ اسْتَيْقَظَ وَإِلا كَانَتَا لَهُ " .
Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were traveling with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He said: "This journey is a cause of hardship and burden, so when a person performs Witr, he should also perform two rak'ahs. If he wakes up (at the time of Fajr prayer), then fine, otherwise these two will suffice for him."
