Section on night prayer – mentioning the instruction to command one’s family to pray at night
Hadith 2566
أَخْبَرَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ كَيْسَانَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ، أَنَّ أَبَاهُ أَخْبَرَهُ ، أَنَّ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ أَخْبَرَهُ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ طَرَقَهُ فَقَالَ : " أَلا تُصَلُّونَ ؟ " فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنَّمَا أَنْفُسُنَا بِيَدِ اللَّهِ ، فَإِذَا شَاءَ أَنْ يَبْعَثَنَا بَعَثَنَا ، فَانْصَرَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حِينَ قُلْتُ ذَلِكَ ، وَلَمْ يَرْجِعْ إِلَيَّ شَيْئًا ، ثُمَّ سَمِعْتُهُ وَهُوَ يَضْرِبُ بِيَدِهِ وَيَقُولُ : وَكَانَ الإِنْسَانُ أَكْثَرَ شَيْءٍ جَدَلا سورة الكهف آية 54 .
Ibn Shihab Zuhri narrates: Imam Zain-ul-Abideen (may Allah be pleased with him) told me this, his father (Sayyiduna Imam Hussain, may Allah be pleased with him) told him this, Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) told him this: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) came to them at night. He inquired: Have you people not performed the prayer? I submitted: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Our souls are in the hand of Allah Almighty; when He wants to awaken us, He awakens us (so today He did not awaken us, so we did not get up). When I said this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he turned back and did not say anything to me. Then I heard him, while striking his hand, reciting this verse: "Man is most argumentative."
