Section on night prayer (Qiyam al-Layl)
Hadith 2551
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الأَزْدِيُّ ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْحَنْظَلِيُّ ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ زُرَارَةَ بْنِ أَوْفَى ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا سَعْدُ بْنُ هِشَامِ بْنِ عَامِرٍ ، وَكَانَ جَارًا لَهُ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ لِعَائِشَةَ : أَخْبِرِينِي عَنْ خُلُقِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَتْ: أَلَسْتَ تَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ؟ قُلْتُ: بَلَى ، قَالَتْ: " خُلُقُ نَبِيِّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ الْقُرْآنَ " ، قَالَ: فَهَمَمْتُ أَنْ أَقُومَ وَلا أَسْأَلُهَا عَنْ شَيْءٍ . فَقُلْتُ: يَا أُمَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ، أَنْبِئِينِي عَنْ قِيَامِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَتْ: أَلَسْتَ تَقْرَأُ هَذِهِ السُّورَةَ: يَا أَيُّهَا الْمُزَّمِّلُ؟ قُلْتُ: بَلَى ، قَالَتْ: " فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ جَلَّ وَعَلا افْتَرَضَ الْقِيَامَ فِي أَوَّلِ هَذِهِ السُّورَةِ ، فَقَامَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَصْحَابُهُ حَوْلا حَتَّى انْتَفَخَتْ أَقْدَامُهُمْ ، وَأَمْسَكَ اللَّهُ خَاتِمَتَهَا اثْنَيْ عَشَرَ شَهْرًا فِي السَّمَاءِ ، ثُمَّ أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ جَلَّ وَعَلا التَّخْفِيفَ فِي آخِرِ هَذِهِ السُّورَةِ ، فَصَارَ قِيَامُ اللَّيْلِ تَطَوُّعًا بَعْدَ فَرِيضَتِهِ " .
Sa’d bin Hisham narrates: He presented himself before Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and said: Tell me about the character of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) replied: Have you not recited the Qur’an? I replied: Yes, I have. She said: The character of the Prophet (peace be upon him) was the Qur’an. The narrator says: I intended that now I should get up and not ask her about anything else. But I said: O Mother of the Believers! Tell me about the night prayer of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) replied: Have you not recited this Surah: “O you who wraps himself [in a garment]”? I replied: Yes, I have. Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: In the beginning of this Surah, Allah made the night prayer obligatory. The Prophet (peace be upon him) and his companions performed the night prayer for a year until their feet became swollen. Allah kept the concluding part of this Surah withheld in the heavens for twelve months, then Allah revealed the command of concession at the end of this Surah, so the night prayer became voluntary, which was previously obligatory.
