Lady Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) went to the mosque at midnight. Some people performed prayer behind him. The next day, people discussed this among themselves, so a greater number of people gathered. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) went again the second night, and some people performed prayer behind him. The next day, people mentioned this matter among themselves, so on the third night, the number of people in the mosque increased. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) went and led them in prayer, and people performed prayer behind him. On the fourth night, the mosque was completely filled. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) did not come out until he came out for the Fajr prayer. When he had performed the Fajr prayer, he turned towards the people, then he recited the testimony of faith and said: "To proceed! Your situation last night was not hidden from me, but I feared that night prayers would be made obligatory upon you and you would be unable to perform them (i.e., you would not be able to fulfill them)."
