Section on voluntary prayers – mentioning the period during which the Prophet prayed while sitting
Hadith 2508
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِدْرِيسَ الأَنْصَارِيُّ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنِ السَّائِبِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ ، عَنِ الْمُطَّلِبِ بْنِ أَبِي وَدَاعَةَ ، عَنْ حَفْصَةَ ، قَالَتْ : " مَا رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلَّى فِي سُبْحَتِهِ جَالِسًا قَطُّ ، حَتَّى كَانَ قَبْلَ وَفَاتِهِ بِعَامٍ ، فَكَانَ يُصَلِّي فِي سُبْحَتِهِ جَالِسًا ، فَيَقْرَأُ السُّورَةَ فَيُرَتِّلُهَا حَتَّى تَكُونَ أَطْوَلَ مِنْ أَطْوَلَ مِنْهَا " .
Sayyida Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: I never saw the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) performing voluntary prayers while sitting, until one year before his passing, the Prophet (peace be upon him) began to perform voluntary prayers while sitting. If he recited any Surah, he would recite it slowly and distinctly, so much so that it would seem longer than a Surah greater than it.
