Section on voluntary prayers – mentioning what the Prophet used to recite in the two rak’ahs before Fajr
Hadith 2459
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى ، حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ النَّاقِدُ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أَحْمَدَ الزُّبَيْرِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : " رَمَقْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ شَهْرًا ، فَكَانَ يَقْرَأُ فِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ قَبْلَ الْفَجْرِ بِ : قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ وَ قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ " ، قَالَ أَبُو حَاتِمٍ : سَمِعَ أَبُو أَحْمَدَ الزُّبَيْرِيُّ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الأَسَدِيُّ هَذَا الْخَبَرَ عَنِ الثَّوْرِيِّ ، وَإِسْرَائِيلَ ، وَشَرِيكٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، فَمَرَّةً كَانَ يُحَدِّثُ بِهِ عَنْ هَذَا ، وَأُخْرَى عَنْ ذَاكَ ، وَتَارَةً عَنْ ذَا .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: I observed the prayer of the Prophet (peace be upon him) for a month; in the two rak'ahs (Sunnah) before Fajr, he used to recite Surah Al-Kafiroon in the first rak'ah and Surah Al-Ikhlas in the second rak'ah. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) Abu Ahmad Zubairi Muhammad bin Abdullah Asadi has also heard this narration from Thawri, Isra'il, and Sharik, which is transmitted from Abu Ishaq; so once he narrated it from this narrator, another time from another, and a third time from yet another.
